We always dreamt of having a small space for Grama… and we have it now, the “Grama Center”

Grama Center

When we thought of moving Grama from my outhouse where it was incubated, we wanted to build a small space in sync with our concept. It has to be in a natural setting, environment friendly, and had to be built on the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

I never wanted to construct a new building. We thought of many options and zeroed in on our tractor shed which was in our backyard. A 20 year old structure with all sides partially open, with a GI low roof. Thats how I can describe it.

A quick thinking and a good walk in our yard yielded most of the materials required for construction.

We had laterite stones, GI pipes, GI sheets, Sand etc available with us which were all leftovers of previous constructions.

Then I was out scouting for doors & windows. I knew Gouthaman is the right person since he deals in old furniture and old wood. I got the perfect windows at his place. He agreed to build a door for me with old wood which was all part of an old house which he bought. Then came a bench and a hanging table, all of which was built in the traditional style with reused wood/ old wood. An old damaged chair lying in my farmshed was renovated & restored.

Restored Chair

I got few roofing tiles from my friend’s place for the extended wall. We had few granite stones left over from the front yard work. It was used for the landing area.

Now Grama Center stands tall next to my house, feels like an extension of my home. Being a women centric organization, I felt the backyard is the right place for Grama Center. We didn’t cut any trees or plants to accommodate, but, we have planted a pair of passion fruit to provide shade in the front yard of Grama Center.

The milestone of having an independent space for Grama was finally accomplished by building a space with minimal environment impact.

Our Grama Center will host regular seminars & trainings for small businesses and women entrepreneurs. It will also see promotions of art & craft on a regular basis.

The view from Grama Center is my front yard and my farm. We sit in the middle of green. We have company of birds and squirrels throughout the day. Birds come for water and food. squirrels are given peanuts in plenty in the squirrel house. Clay pots are regularly filled with water for birds. We see that the bird feeder is always filled with their food.
